Today we’re focusing on 2 young climbers have been crushing some hard boulder problems recently.
First we’re got British boulderer Shauna Coxsey, who, fresh from her second place in the Boulder World Cup Circuit, has become just the third woman in history to climb an 8B+ problem. The route in question is “New Base Line” and it lies in the forest of Magic Wood in Switzerland. Bernd Zangerl first did the problem in 2002 and initially thought it was 8C but it was later downgraded. It was less than 2 years ago that Tomoko Ogawa became the first woman to climb 8B+ and just 2 days before Shauna did New Base Line, Ashima Shiraishi became the second, aged just 13, with her ascent of Golden Shadow in Rocklands, South Africa.
Sticking with 13 year olds climbing Golden Shadow, Italian Mirko Caballero has also climbed the problem, adding it to his recent ascent of Thomas Willenberg’s The Vice, an 8B also in Rocklands that Mirko did earlier on his trip to the area. As if all that wasn’t enough, he also managed to flash a couple of 8A’s – not a bad bouldering trip.
