Outdoor 2015 proved to be a battle amongst climbing manufactures to see who could produce the best updated camming device. Black Diamond's offering was the Camalot C4 Ultralight which is on average 25% lighter than the equivalent standard C4 cam. Black Diamond have achieved this reduction in weight by replacing the steel cable with dyneema, by making the sling slightly lighter and by using cam lobes with larger cut out sections. While the weight saving is undoubtedly a benefit for any climber using trad gear, we expect the Camalot Ultralights to find particular favour among alpinists and big wall climbers where any saving on weight can be crucial. This was by far and away the most impressive cam we saw during the show and we've no doubt that other manufacturers will soon be following suit to update their cams in the Ultralight mould. Not sure they're worth the extra money unless you're doing something where weight is absolutely vital. Will wait until the price comes down myself.
