World renowned climber Andy Parkin has been evacuated by Air Force after being avalanched while trying to climb Plateau Peak (7,287m) in the East Karakoram. He was struck while in his tent and was carried into a 30m-deep crevasse. He was able to extract himself and sound the alarm, but injuries to his back kept him from moving and he had to be evacuated. Earlier, an Indian expedition from the Kolkata section of the Himalayan Club made the long awaited first ascent of Plateau Peak. This is the same peak Andy's team was after before being avalanched.
