After 2 rounds in North America, the IFSC Boulder World Cup was back in China this weekend for the penultimate round of the tour. Meanwhile, the IFSC lead World Cup began at the same time so the Chinese fans were treated to a packed few days of competition in Haiyang. In some hot and humid weather the bouldering competitors were clearly finding things pretty tough and the number of tops required to make the final was much lower than in recent events. In the women’s event the finalists only needed 2 tops in 3 attempts and in the men’s the success rate was even lower, with one top in 3 attempts being enough to reach the final. Most of the familiar faces from the past few rounds, including Shauna Coxsey, Akiyo Noguchi and Anna Stohr made it into the women’s final and it was those 3 who once again made up the podium, with Akiyo on top, followed by Shauna in second and Anna in third. This means that the race for the overall World Cup title is now a straight shoot out between Shauna and Akiyo and it will all come down to final event in Laval, France this coming weekend. Meanwhile over in the men’s event, German Jan Hojer is now firmly in control of the overall competition, having won in Haiyang ahead of Sean McColl in second and Guillaume Glairon Mondet in third. He now has a 45 point lead in the overall standings and looks set to claim his first overall World Cup win. In the lead event, things looked much the same as last year in the women’s competition with last year’s overall winner, Korea’s Jain Kim, taking victory. Austria’s Magdalena Rock got second whilst Belgium’s Anak Verhoeven was third. It’s early days but Jain already looks like the person to beat again this year. Over the men’s lead competition, Austria’s Jakob Schubert took the win, ahead of Canadian Sean McColl, who replicated his second place in the bouldering with the same result in the lead. France’s Gautier Supper came in third. The next lead event takes place right here in Chamonix so stay tuned.
