With only a week in which to rest and travel from Korea, the IFSC lead athletes were in Wujang, China this weekend for the 6th round of the World Cup tour. This event saw by far the most unpredictable results of the season with both men’s and women’s finals being contested by an unlikely group of climbers. Neither Adam Ondra or the leader in the current overall standings, Jakob Schubert, made it into the final, while over in the women’s event Jain Kim didn’t make it into the top 8, but lesser known climbers like Japan’s Aya Onoe and Yuka Kobayashi did. To give you an idea of what surprise results these are, Jain Kim has been in the top 2 in 30 of the last 40 World Cup events and Jakob’s worst result in the last 12 rounds has been 4th. That all left the finals very open and eventually it was Mina Markovic who took the women’s victory for the second event running, with Anak Verhoeven in second and Helene Janicot in third - a repeat of the top 3 from last weeks event in Mokpo. This all leaves Mina in third overall, 36 points behind Magdalena Rock, who is a further 11 points behind Jain Kim in first. The biggest surprise of the season so far was undoubtedly Stefano Ghisolfi taking the win in Wujang after an extremely consistent, if unspectacular, season of making every final so far but never managing better than 6th place. He was followed by Ramon Julian Puigblanque and EpicTV star Romain Desgranges. All this means that Jakob Schubert stays in first overall but Romain is now just 57 points behind in second. He hasn’t won an event this year but Romain’s incredible consistency in always making finals and more often than not, the podium, has put him in a really strong position for the last 2 rounds of the tour. Next week the athletes move on to China and then the final round of the tour takes place in Kranj, Slovenia on the 15th and 16th November. Stay tuned and we’ll bring you all the results.
