Sometimes to get that lovely bit of untracked powder, you have to put in a little extra effort. Like flying to Alaska, starting an expedition and walking up mountains. A lot. The joy of the expedition, really, is throwing oneself into the unknown and adapting to what then unfolds. Last winter Andrew McLean and a small crew headed into Alaska's Ruth Gorge to seek out skiable lines and explore the glaciers and rugged terrain around them. With dangerous avalanche conditions and extremely cold temperatures they played the hand they were dealt carefully, and instead of pressing their luck, they enjoyed the travel, 'easy' skiing, scenery and companionship. Returning safely is always the goal, and this skiing expedition was therefore a success.
