Board Stories

Hawaii is littered with surfboards. Some ancient, some just hours old. Boards are made, boards are destroyed. They were made by somebody for somebody and then were either treasured, discarded, ignored or mistreated. Yet some surfboards have a story that matters, a story worth telling. In this six part series shot and filmed on location on the North Shore of Oahu, six surfboards tell their unique story. By talking to the men that made them and the surfer's that rode them, we trace the surfboard's past to reveal the part they played in surfing history. With Shane Dorian's PBU Paddler, Kalani Chapman's Owl's Shooter, Harrison Roach's Modern Bonzer, Pancho Sullivan's Sunset Special, Rory Russell's Pipeliner and Tom Stone's handcarved Boards of the Gods, the series looks at six individual chunks of foam, fibreglass and wood whose very existence have either changed surfing or represent where surfing might be headed. Mixing of high-octane surfing action with good old-fashioned storytelling Board Stories is a series that puts the humble surfboard at the heart of the narrative. Each surfboard has a story... some just have better stories than others.
