The rack of a crack climber, and particularly an off-width crack climber, looks very different to the more conventional climber's set up. Cams, tape and soft shoes are perhaps the three most important tools at the crack climber's disposal. Cams as the easiest and often only protection on wide cracks, tape to protect the hands which more often than not come in for a beating in this type of climbing and soft shoes, which make it easier for the climber to effectively jam their feet in the cracks. As a developer of new routes, Pat Kingsbury's rack also contains equipment for cleaning and bolting.
